This connection with the Vulcans is brilliant-it could be the excuse for a new government, with us as the leaders. He’s always two steps ahead of everyone else, with friends in every corner. Perhaps it was time to tell his son the truth. Vulcan rituals relied upon a combination of mysticism, biology, and collective consciousness that he didn’t pretend to understand. He certainly hoped that was the case, but he had to admit to himself that he was guessing. There’s nothing in the ritual that can harm you." You volunteered for this experiment, and you have to be brave. "On Vulcan, all children go through koon-ut-la at your age, when they meet their future mate. He had explained this all before, but the boy needed reassuring. Not on Romulus, answered Wislok patiently. I mean, no other boys go through this ritual. There are times when subterfuge is called for, and this is one of those times. Why can’t we go in a hovercraft? asked the boy. Work in the sewers was restricted to the plebians. Like most children of the Pretorium, he had experienced only the finer things in life. Hasmek looked wide-eyed at their gloomy surroundings. Wislok stared into the eyes of the seven-year-old Hasmek, a smaller version of himself. His people were master builders, renowned throughout the galaxy, but they were also master destroyers.įather, I want to go back, said a small voice beside him. It was a marvel of engineering that no one ever saw. He gazed at the ceiling of the cavernous tunnel, with its network of baffles and vents for removing harmful gases, then he looked down at the intricate system of tanks, gutters, and reclamation pools. He was intent upon his mission, and his only means of reaching the shuttle-craft field undetected was through this sewer. His long tapered nose did not contract at the odors of the reservoir, which relieved the great city of its waste. Chapter OneĪN OLDER MAN with a saturnine face, sallow complexion, dark hair, and angular eyebrows pulled his hood over his pointed ears and stared down into a dripping cesspool. This story takes place shortly after the events portrayed in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. But it’s definitely worth of note.Īfter all this is the first time their minds brushed.Cover: Star Trek: Mind Meld, by John Vornholt CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP Contents In the aftermath of the meld, when they wait for the enemy though Jim seems to be unconcentrated, while McCoy and Scotty just stare right ahead… As I said, maybe it’s coincidence, maybe it’s intention. While Scotty and McCoy freeze and don’t dare to move an inch, although Spock is really gentle, Kirk keeps moving slightly and seems almost relaxed, no wide open eyes or stiff posture AT ALL. It’s probably not intended by the writers, but I nevertheless love the fact that the only one who seems to be quite comfortable with Spock invading his mind is Kirk. A light telepathic contact to play a trick on the mind, to save them all. If I had to categorize it, I’d say it’s more of a mind probe. I’m not sure this really qualifies as a full meld though, since none of them seem to be much effected. So, the first meld with Kirk happens out of necessity. (Because they are about to get shot western style, don’t ask…this was a weird episode.) Spock HAS to meld with Kirk, Scotty and McCoy in order to save their lives, because he has to convince their minds that whatever happens to their bodies isn’t real. The thing about this meld is, that it happens in the line of duty (this is important in a later part), just like any other meld Spock initiated with anyone. The gifs above are take from “Spectre of the Gun”. Suprisingly, because this is the first episode of the third season and the Vulcan mind meld is established in “Dagger of the Mind”, which is the tenth episode of the first season. The very first time they meld is suprisingly late in the series. Because of this I’ve decided to take a closer look at the times Spock melded with his captain throughout the five year mission. Thus it should suprise no one that I am obsessed with the mind link between Jim and Spock that, thanks to Gene Roddenberry, is very much canon (more about that later). Especially the way temporary links and more permanent bonds are created. (The melds have been completed when the four killers arrive at theįellow Trekkies who got to know me a bit are very aware that I’m fascinated by the way the Vulcan mind works. SPOCK: (to McCoy) The bullets are unreal. (The marshalls gather as the lightning flashes and the wind blows.)
